Class plan
Today we will be taking a field trip to the Interference Archive in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn (314 7th St, Brooklyn, NY 11215, google maps).
Public transportation from school takes about 35 minutes and there are two options:
- Take the F train from 14th St (at 6th Ave) toward Coney Island and exit at the 4th Ave – 9th St stop, or
- Take the R or W trains from Union Square toward Bay Ridge, get off at 9th St stop.
On Thursday, we’ll meet at 11:40am at a location near school (to be determined together in class). You can travel with the class, or feel free to get there on your own. Our tour will start at 12:15pm. So please be prompt! We’ll be there for about an hour.
Preparation and background materials
I hope most of our time there will be spent viewing materials from a recent exhibition called “Resistance Radio”, “showcasing the power of radio in the service of social movements and underrepresented communities.”
In advance, you might have a look at the “Resistance Radio” exhibition website. You can read more about the exhibition on the Interference Archive website. And there is also a zine (available here as a PDF) which was produced as part of the exhibit.
You needn’t spend too much time reviewing these materials before our visit, although having a look through them may prompt some questions and give you a sense of some physical objects to look at once we’re there in person. This could also serve as useful follow-up material after the visit as a reminder of some things that we see …

One of the co-organizers of “Resistance Radio” is Charlie Muller who teaches a class called “Digital Network Infrastructure” in the Code as a Liberal program at Lang. Charlie has written about internet access and autonomous networks and you might enjoy having a look at this piece which relates to some themes of our readings for this week:
