Readings
• Lisa Nakamura, “Feeling good about feeling bad: virtuous virtual reality and the automation of racial empathy”, Journal of Visual Culture, 19(1), 47–64
• Rebecca Solnit, Paradise Built in Hell, 2009. Let’s read the Prelude, “Falling Together” (pages 1-10), as well as the Epilogue, “The Doorway in Ruins” (pages 305-313). And if you have time I suggest you try reading one chapter in the middle; I recommend “What Difference Would it Make?” (pages 231-246).
Examples
I’d also like to take some time in class this week to watch some of the below videos:
- Mark Zuckerberg and Rachel Franklin “visiting” flooded Puerto Rico in virtual reality (VR). Here’s a short piece about this stunt: Olivia Solon, “Mark Zuckerberg ‘tours’ flooded Puerto Rico in bizarre virtual reality promo”, The Guardian, Oct 9, 2017. Teaser: “The Facebook CEO’s cartoon avatar visited the hurricane-damaged island in a tone-deaf live stream that was part disaster tourism, part product promotion.”

- Lots of Weather Channel videos using techniques probably best described as augmented reality (AR) or mixed reality:
- Flooding with Erika Navarro
- Flooding with Mark Elliot
- Flash flood
- Ice storm
