ANNOUNCEMENT, Sept 15: The "Schedule & Readings" page has now been updated to include our complete topic and reading schedule for the rest of the semester, copied over from the syllabus. I have also added a link to Google Drive folder containing all the readings for the semester in case you would prefer to download that way. ANNOUNCEMENT, Sept 5: The "Schedule & Readings" page now includes a template that you can use for your lab notebook ("hacker log") entries, which includes instructions about how to approach these responses. IN THE NEWS, Sept 3: "Student Charged in Cyberattacks at Miami-Dade Schools", NY Times "Virtual classes in the fourth-largest school district in the United States were choked by glitches this week. A 16-year-old high school junior has admitted to the cyberattacks." — "The student admitted to orchestrating eight Distributed Denial-of-Service cyberattacks, designed to overwhelm district networks." — "The student was charged as a juvenile offender with computer use in an attempt to defraud, a felony, and interference with an educational institution, a misdemeanor." — "One of the attacks was associated with an IP address that led investigators to the student’s home." — "The glitches had targeted district networks, including those needed to run My School Online, an online learning platform from a company called K12. Jack Meyer, 17, a senior at Miami Palmetto Senior High School ... who reported on the glitches for the school newspaper, said the problems had largely been resolved after teachers switched to other platforms, such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom." — "The notion that a 16-year-old could bring down the entire I.T. system is concerning, and it should raise questions," said Douglas A. Levin, a cybersecurity expert and the president of EdTech Strategies, a consulting firm. ANNOUNCEMENT, Sept 3: The "Schedule & Readings" page now includes a link to the reading responses Google Doc, which includes instructions about how to post your responses there.
